Marlo Kirkpatrick is a storyteller whose work evokes emotions from humor to sorrow, excitement to frustration, and uses those emotions to move audiences to action.
Marlo is the author of Mississippi Off the Beaten Path, a guide to unique attractions currently in its sixth edition. She and her husband, wildlife and nature photographer Stephen Kirkpatrick, collaborated on the book Lost in the Amazon: The True Story of Five Men and Their Desperate Battle for Survival and on the coffee table books Images of Madison County, Mississippi Impressions, Romancing the Rain, Wilder Mississippi, and To Catch the Wind.
Marlo has won more than 175 local, regional, and national awards for creative excellence. Lost in the Amazon was the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association’s 2007 Book of the Year. Romancing the Rain was a winner in the 2003 Writer’s Digest International Self-Published Book Awards and in the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Awards competition, and was the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association’s 2003 Book of the Year. The Kirkpatricks’ book Wilder Mississippi was the winner of the 2002 National Outdoor Book Award and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association’s 2002 Book of the Year.
Marlo and Stephen fell in love on an expedition to the jungles of the Peruvian Amazon, and returned to Peru in 1998 for their wedding ceremony at Machu Picchu. The Kirkpatricks have since made several return trips to the rain forest. On a recent expedition, Marlo complained of snakes under her bed and cockroaches on her toothbrush. Stephen told her she was “just too high maintenance.”
The Kirkpatricks’ work has taken them to destinations throughout North, Central, and South America. Their current projects focus on tropical locations and underwater photography. The couple is represented by the Denise Marcil Literary Agency of New York, New York.
Marlo is a cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi with degrees in journalism and English. Prior to launching her freelance career in 1995, she was Senior Writer with an advertising agency. She is a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and the Jackson Advertising Federation, and serves on the board of directors of the Madison Ark Animal Shelter.
